Saw the midnite advanced screening of Stepbrothers tonite.
Basic plot: divorced man with 39 year old son living at home meets divorced woman with 40 year old son living at home and turns what would be a one night stand into instant bond and a quick marriage and the now stepbrothers are territorial and refuse to get along but then discover that they have too much in common to remain enemies, so they become best friends and since they are such simpleminded fools, they get into a lot of trouble together.
Most of the movie was pretty funny. There were a few hilarious bits and a few really stupid bits and the nudity they decided to use was a bit...um...disturbing is a good word. Overall it was entertaining throughout, but I'm torn on whether to recommend seeing it at the theater or just waiting til it comes out on dvd. Reason is because it's a GREAT movie to have that full "theater experience" with but since there are no special effects making it big screen requirable (heh, is that even a word?), as long as you can wait another few months, it might be better to wait until you can buy it and that way you can see it over and over again for just that one price.
That said, a lot of the funny scenes were shown in the trailer, but probably the best parts were the shock scenes...both verbal and visual...and the younger brother was such a douchebag that you were just itching to see him get some kind of comeuppance.
All of the songs were...entertaining. Can't decide which I liked better. The car song or the stage song, but both had the entire theater erupting in laughter and oddly enough they were also performed pretty well.
I don't want to give too much away, but one of my favorite scenes in the trailer, I thought they weren't going to show because it felt like they had already passed that point of being able to add it, but where it ended up being, it made it that much better and that much funnier.
All of the characters were likeable but I really enjoyed the scenes with Denise, Alice, and Cinnamon (shown separately) the best. Hopefully there will be a ton of deleted scenes with these characters in them since they didn't really have that much screen time.
The only bad thing I can think of about this movie is that it is forgettable. Every scene was enjoyable and entertaining and either funny or touching (whichever they are wanting you to feel at that moment) but it doesn't stick with you after the credits roll and you have left the theater. So I will recommend seeing this movie, but just make sure that you have already seen the following movies (at the theater) first: The Dark Knight (review to follow tomorrow), Journey To The Center Of The Earth 3-D, and Wanted.
Oh, and it's worth mentioning that when the redband trailer started for Pineapple Express, there were QUITE a few people in the theater clapping and whooping, so I get the feeling that THAT midnite show will be a crowded house.
Bottom line: If you're in the mood to see some side splitting scenes of funniness that you may not have seen done before, sprinkled with a few scenes of gross jokes and lots of shocking utterances, and provided you are not easily offended by the vulgarity, then this is your movie. Just don't expect it to be another Superbad and you will enjoy it more.
Also, don't forget to stay after the credits. The very, very end was just a tiny blip that wasn't that big of a deal, but right after the credits start rolling there is another scene that IS worth staying in your seat for. And, once again, I was the only one in the theater that got to see it. And there were about 100 or so people that were there for the movie. Too bad. Their loss. (When ARE these people going to learn?)
