I saw the trailer for The Rocker and thought it looked like a mildly interesting movie and since it just opened tonight, I figured I'd check it out.
What an EXCELLENT movie! The perfect escape movie! Everything about it was entertaining and it let me forget about the super-crappy day I had at work and I was able to just sit back and enjoy the hilarious costumes and the surprisingly great music!
The beginning of the film was a little cheesy but it was supposed to be, because that is what the hair bands were in the 80's. Fish is the drummer of the up and coming rock sensation Vesuvius and after a hit show, the band is offered a contract with a record company. Only catch...they have to get rid of Fish because the owner wants to put his son in the band. Dangling fame and fortune in front of the rest of the band members, they turn on Fish and kick him out and then flash forward 20 years and you see the once full of energy, never say die ex-band member now part of the dull rat race and with Vesuvius climbing the charts higher and higher with each new album and their faces literally everywhere, Fish still has not gotten past the band screwing him over and that leads to his live-in girlfriend kicking him out and now he is forced to live with his sister and her family.
As luck would have it, his nephew is part of a band and they need a drummer so they give Fish a shot. Obviously he isn't an immediate match for their fashion style but he is able to blend right in when it comes to the music and his next challenge will be to get them a gig, because if he is able to do this then he will be allowed to join the band.
I don't want to say much more about it because it was a fun ride of a movie and while it was a bit predictable, there was lots of heart as well as lots of laughs and all of the characters had great chemistry together. I was especially surprised at Christina Applegate's role. Her scenes were probably the best out of everyone's. She has come a long way since her Kelly Bundy days and still looks just as good...if not better. One of the best lines in the movie was where the manager was trying to hit on her and said that she had probably heard the term MILF but he was going to refer to her as a MILMSLT (mothers I'd like to make sweet love to) and she got all serious and said how sweet that was of him to say and then she said she would refer to him as PILS and asked if he had ever heard of it (of course he hadn't) and she said it's people I'd like to stab. :]
And one more of my favorite lines was where the band members (the band is called A.D.D., by the way, but it is not pronounced "add" which has several jokes attached to it that you'll just have to hear in the movie) were all in the car together and the lead singer was jotting down some lyrics and Fish asked him to sing a few bars of this newest song he was writing. The song was called Bitter and it was an extremely depressing song. After he sang a few lines, Fish said "There is some cyanide and razors in the glove compartment. Help yourself." :]
So the music from Vesuvius was a cross between Motley Crue and Van Halen (from the David Lee Roth days) but the majority of the songs you hear were from A.D.D. which was more like Maroon 5 meets Linkin Park with a shoulder brush by Black Eyed Peas. If you like any of those groups then I am fairly sure you would enjoy the music.
I don't like rating movies using the star system because I feel that there are too many factors that need to be considered to simply give a movie a numerical value. So I will just say that this was a great feel-good movie that keeps you laughing and your toes tapping and there was also some nice eye candy (Emma & Christina for the guys, Teddy for the girls - oh my god were his eyes gorgeous!). I don't care what those other idiot critics say about how stupid some of the scenes were and how corny everything is because I can just feel them bashing it right now...if you enjoy rock music and you like to laugh, and you're looking for a way to escape the stress of an uber shitty day at work, GO SEE THE ROCKER!
In fact, the only movie I anticipate being just as funny, if not funnier, is The House Bunny. But, you see, I am already biased into liking it because any movie that the storyline is turning housefrows into sluts can't possibly go wrong.
Anyway, let me know what your opinion is of The Rocker. I can see this being a movie I would watch over and over again.
Vixy :]
