I had no intention of seeing Charlie Wilson's War last night. In fact, I had it on the bottom of my list of movies to see this weekend and if I wasn't able to fit it into my schedule, then I would just do without seeing it at all and I would have been fine.
But, I found myself playing around on the computer reading others' blogs (and fine tuning my own) and quickly lost track of the time and before I knew it, it was nearing 7pm. I had already missed the time slot for P.S. I Love You - the one new movie out this weekend that I have been waiting patiently (or, make that, impatiently) to see ever since I saw the first previews for it and if I wanted to see it later tonight, the movie before it could start no later than 8 to be over in time. Well, Charlie started at 7:35 and would be over in just enough time to allow myself a potty break before I Love You started. So, Charlie it was.
I wasn't expecting much from this movie because although the previews for it were somewhat funny, it seemed the type to have all the good parts shown in the trailer with nothing left for the movie, itself.
I was wrong.
I was laughing throughout the entire thing (as were the rest of the people in the theater) from all of the witty remarks bantered back and forth between the characters.
One thing that sticks out about this movie was all of the T&A (no pun intended). A Fergie lookalike is in the very beginning topless in a whirlpool and in fact, I was pretty convinced that it WAS her until I saw at the end in the credits that her small role was played by someone I'd never heard of before. Guys will definitely enjoy the eye candy as you have Amy Adams',Shirri Appleby's, and Julia Roberts' cleavage in your face quite a bit (although nothing is actually shown on any of them) and there are many rump shots as the camera is following closely behind (again, no pun intended) as they are walking. And don't worry, girls, for you there is a nice Tom Hanks butt shot who'da thought he had a nice ass...maybe he had a body double.)
Many sexual references are made because Charlie Wilson's staff is completely composed of good-looking girls. And one of the best lines in the movie (when Gus commented to one of Charlie's assistants that they were all good looking and was this a common thing in Texas) the busty hottie said to him, "As Charlie says, 'You can always teach 'em to type, but'cha can't teach 'em to grow tits.'" (Apparently, I'm not the only one that thought this was a great line, because this line is being quoted all over imdb, too. I swear, do I need to start bringing in a pad of paper and a pen and jot down all of the quotes I like so that I make sure not to use one someone else already has? Because there were just way too many good lines to be able to remember ALL of them.)
Okay, so the plot of the story is Charlie Wilson is a congressman in Texas who grows an interest in helping Afghanistan fight against Russia. He wants them to be able to shoot down the Russian planes. Charlie is able to accomplish this in ways that are informative, entertaining and at times, shocking.
And remember, this is based on a true story.
Highly recommended for history buffs who want to see how it all went down, but also for anyone who just wants to sit back, relax, laugh, and be thoroughly entertained.
The one thing that was very distracting was Julia Roberts as a blonde. Just doesn't work. She was supposed to be this hot sex symbol - and one of the many women that Charlie sleeps with - but with her hair that color, she just looked like a scary Amazon to me.
What was one of YOUR favorite lines/scenes?

I'll never understand why Hollywood takes a perfectly servicable redhead and makes her into a blonde.
I wanted to see this movie, but was very disappointed to see Aaron Sorkin couldn't lay off the mythology of left wing politics for two darn hours.
I'll download it instead.
I assume you're referring to Amy Adams, right? She still looked good, though.
Regarding the politics, I don't particularly like "message" movies but I thought this one was enjoyable enough.
