Juno Movie Review

I've been getting a tad behind with my movie reviews what with several of them coming out on Christmas day, so the next few movie reviews will be scattered throughout the week.

Saw Juno last night. I had really high expectations based on the previews. I was not disappointed at all. It was excellent! And dare I say it, I thought it was MUCH funnier than Superbad. Funny how Michael Cera seems to always play the same character no matter what he's in, so he's still dressed in the dorky clothes with the awkward look on his face, not really sure what he's supposed to say. But he always makes it work for him in everything he's in and he's always so funny!

Ellen Page as Juno stole the show, though. Her witty, sardonic humor kept everyone roaring with laughter from beginning to end. And it was nice to see that the characters remained true to themselves as opposed to taking on someone else's opinion and then completely changing.

The basic story is that Juno and Bleek are teens and, bored one night, they have sex. The movie opens up with Juno walking down the street chugging a gallon of Sunny D on her way to the quick stop so she can buy a pregnancy test. You find out that this has been her third pregnancy test of the morning and that's where the line comes in from the trailer (that remains one of the funniest in the movie) where she sees the plus sign in the test and starts shaking it vigorously. The quick stop manager looks at her and tells her that it ain't no Etch A Sketch. This is one doodle that can't be undone.

Telling her parents that she's pregnant had a very absurd and totally unrealistic reaction from both, but you're sitting there thinking that her parents are pretty cool, and apparently unshockable.

Juno wants to do the right thing to make sure the kid is able to be taken care of, and she knows that she's not ready to be a mother at 16, so she finds the perfect couple to adopt her baby. This is where Jennifer Garner and Jason Bateman come in. You can tell by looking at them that there's something wrong with them, but you can't quite put your finger on it until Juno and the husband start spending alone time together.

So now you're at the point where you're not sure if you still want her to give up her baby or keep it and raise the baby, herself. And if she does keep the baby, would she be by herself?

Great movie. Satisfying ending. Refreshing comedy...not the same ol' same ol' lines added to a movie to make it funny. And the Juno character is the spunkiest little thing. Though it's a bit sad to be so cynical at her young age.

Don't miss this one!

Let me know what you thought of it and which lines you liked best. Because this one is filled with so many, unless you had a tape recorder that you left on record for the entire movie, you wouldn't be able to recite them all.

Vixy :]

I saw Juno and have to agree it was a good movie. I thought it was going to be one of those "oh no, she's a teenager and she's pregnant" storylines, but it wasn't. Juno is forced to make some hard choices, but she also forces the realization (to the viewer) that just because you are in some kind of bind, it doesn't have to own you and your life doesn't have to change. She stays true to herself throughout the movie - a spunky teenager who knows she's not ready to have her own family yet. The other thing that got me was that Ellen looks so much like Jennifer Garner except younger obviously. Jason Bateman's character was interesting to me, he went in a totally different direction than I thought he would (without giving away too much of the movie). Juno was quite funny which was evidenced by the fact that the audience was laughing and pretty rambunctious throughout the movie (irritating for me, but still a sign of a good movie). I plan to see it again when it comes out on DVD.
