National Treasure Book Of Secrets Review

I saw the midnight sneak preview of National Treasure Book Of Secrets at midnight last night.

Picture Raiders Of The Lost Ark meets The Pink Panther.

I'm never sure what would spoil any of it for anyone, but I can definitely say that you don't need to see the first National Treasure to be able to enjoy its sequel Book Of Secrets. (Because I forgot to watch the first one as a refresher before seeing this and I didn't get lost.)

It was nice that all of the original characters reprised their roles. I absolutely DETEST sequels that have all new actors playing the same characters from the original. The only exception is if the original was played by a kid and the sequel fastforwards so much that a much older person is required to play the character. (Then I find it to be only mildly annoying.)

Anyway, Book Of Secrets opens up post-Civil War where you see a man being held at gunpoint required to solve a riddle which is the key to finding a map to a most wonderous treasure. The man at gunpoint is Ben Gates' (Nic Cage) great grandfather and has been accused of being involved in the assassination of Abe Lincoln. Diary entries showing this key is supposedly contained in the previously thought to be urban legend of the president's book of secrets (which also include Roswell info as well as the Watergate top secret info). So now with the help of his girlfriend, his best buddy, and his father, he is determined to get a look at this book to clear his great grandfather's name. However, after a few failed (but laugh out loud) attempts to locate the book, he comes to the realization that the only way he will be able to get a look at it is if he is able to get the president alone. The challenge doesn't stop there, though. Even after being told where the book is, he still has to face combination locks and secret passage ways in order to get to the well-hidden gem, which proves to be a difficult task...what with the FBI and CIA hot on his heels.

There were a few boring parts at the beginning as the characters are being introduced and as you are learning about the book; and of course they had to throw in several "yeah, RIGHT!" moments at the end when the characters are faced with the various obstacles that must be overcome; but all in all, National Treasure Book Of Secrets was a very entertaining movie.

I might end up seeing this one again. As with most movies I see at the midnight show, I had a hard time staying awake and I think I may have dozed for a few minutes.

So what did YOU think of it?

The first one surprised me. I'm not sure if I'll wait for the DVD or not. There's just SO much good stuff to see.

Hi Dwight! You have a very good point. There are definitely a lot better ones out right now. I think this one would be ok to wait for the dvd since the special effects were nothing new. The first one was more geared toward action and adventure, while this one focused more on getting the laugh...and therefore not a requirement to see on the big screen. Save your money for Charlie Wilson's War. You'll want to see it before it leaves theaters. Vixy :)
