I had half a day of vacation left for the year (use it or lose it) and my intention was to work til 11am today. I still had to get there as early as humanly possible to find a file in the archives (which can take several minutes up to an hour to locate), tackle three large asap problems first thing and get two pricings completed...and I was supposed to have everything completed before 11am.
I was able to make it in by 5 which would have made my half day (4 hours) actually closer to a full day even leaving "early" but as things typically go with my days, 11 am came and went and I was still at work trying to get problems taken care of and nowhere ready to leave yet. It took a co-worker getting pissed at me that I was working thru my vacation time and reminding me that "we don't save lives here, so the work can wait" before I finally decided to give up and shut my computer down for the day.
My eventual departure time? Noon.
I had such high hopes for getting in early this morning so that I could get all of my work caught up before the end of the year so that I could start with a clean slate coming back on Wednesday, but even though I made some pretty good progress, knocking off some of the nastiest items that have been on my to-do list for a long time, I still wasn't able to accomplish that task.
So now I am faced with the dilemma of going in to work tomorrow and working a half day to get more stuff buttoned up (the more I finish tomorrow, the less I'll have to worry about on Wednesday) or just staying home, catching up on sleep (sleeping is always fun) and possibly getting some housekeeping (at home) done.
At my parents' house now to celebrate New Year's with them, but they just went to bed which leaves me alone with my thoughts of going home and going to sleep now and getting to work by 6 and working til noon while telling them that I decided to sleep in, or going to sleep now (here) and actually sleeping late, or going home now and going to sleep and actually sleeping in (at my house) or going home and popping in When Harry Met Sally...which is probably the greatest New Year's movie...and then deciding after the movie is over what option to pick.
Both my house and my office space are cluttered up and are in desperate need of organization; but of the two, probably my work area would take the least amount of time to straighten up, which is usually why I pick that area to work on first. I mean, if you're supposed to start with the smallest room of the house to clean so that you have a tiny taste of success, then shouldn't that be my cube at work that I start with?
Speaking of successes, I did have one minor exciting thing happen to me earlier tonight. I fixed my downstairs toilet all by myself. Probably for all you fix-it-yourself'ers that would be a piece of cake, but for me that was pretty huge. I've always had mom or dad to help out whenever I needed something looked at and fixed but this time, I was able to look at the problem (water not refilling), decide what needed to be done to make it work right (plug wasn't completely covering the hole which made the water not return to the correct level), and I took care of it (repositioned the plug and to speed things along, added more water to the tank until it was at the correct level and then it was ready to flush like normal). Even with the lack of exclamation marks, it really was a very thrilling thing for me. Not saying by any means that this automatically makes me the go-to girl for fixing toilets, but at least it means that I'm not completely helpless....or would that be hopeless? I believe either one works for this particular scenario.
Thinking about it now, I believe that was an omen. So my decision is made. With dog in tow, before midnight strikes and all the drunks and crazies are out on the streets, I am going home now, popping in When Harry Met Sally (provided I can find it...if I can't after a 5 minute search, I'll just watch What Dreams May Come (which is about a depressing movie as they come) because I know exactly where that one is) and then whenever I wake up, I wake up. Then begins the organization....at my house.
Thank you for "listening" and have a Happy New Year!
