Movie Review - Charlie Bartlett

Charlie Bartlett has been compared to Juno as the best coming of age movie this year. I liked Charlie and Juno but I don't think they belong in the same category. Juno was more a comedy with bitlets of drama sprinkled in whereas Charlie was equally comedy and drama.

Charlie lives alone with his mother. His father is in jail and has been for quite some time now. Pretty much every private school has expelled Charlie, so his mom decided to enroll Charlie in public school for the first time. As you can probably figure out, Charlie is quite the fish out of water and he wants nothing more than to be popular, so he utilizes the shrink on call for his family to get various different types of medication and he sells it at school while providing free help sessions for those who just want to talk out their problems. All of this is going well for him until the principal makes the announcement that security cameras will be installed in the schools and everyone expects Charlie to lead the picket group, but how can he go head to head with the guy who is his girlfriend's father? And would it really be worth staying popular to just get kicked out of one more school?

Excellent movie! Great storyline. Nice that it wasn't the same ol' same ol' stuff. Reminded me a bit of Ferris Bueller and the girlfriend, Susan, was quite the looker...a bit like a young Rose McGowan with the ruby stained lips and the goth thing going.

And I probably shouldn't admit this, but except for the scary drunk scene, I found myself thinking just how tasty Robert Downey, Jr. was looking. DAMN he was fine!

Highly recommended, but not really necessary to see on the big screen. Unless you want to compare it to Juno side by side.

Vixy :]
