Movie Review - 30 Days Of Night

Once a year in Barrow, Alaska, the sun sets and is not seen for 30 days. Because of this, most of town's inhabitants leave Barrow to go elsewhere since they can't handle being without the sun for that long. There is one more flight out of Barrow and then nothing in, nothing out for a full month. A stranger has somehow come to town. He starts making trouble and the young sherrif arrests him and as the stranger is in jail, he starts talking about how "they're coming" and "you can't stop them" and then we find out that all of the sled dogs have been brutally massacred, but that's just the beginning. One by one and then small groups of people at a time start being grabbed by quick flashes where you then see their heads disengaged from their bodies and their bodies later ripped apart. It takes awhile to see that these are vampires doing the killings. ( They are all really creepy looking...good job with the special effects makeup.) With the speed and power the vampires have and no sun to kill them, the town is now down to just a small handful who are quickly running out of places to hide because the vamps can smell their blood. They've lasted the majority of the time with just a few days left before the sun returns, but the vamp gang is closing in on them.

This was a really good movie! Great plot and not having read the graphic novel it was based on, I wasn't sure what was going to happen next. Downsides: It wasn't as scary as I had anticipated and quite a few of the scenes had quick flashes that you weren't sure what was going on....I hate that. And I don't remember hearing the ominous song they played in the trailer as we see the liquid stuff flowing down the snow...for that scene in the movie, it was silent. But there was plenty of action, tense moments, and blood shed to satisfy a horror critic.

Another movie with lots of subtitles...the vamps had their own language...so ssupload is not the way to go to see this movie. Then again, I think it would be best seen on the big screen, anyway. Worth buying when it comes out on dvd...especially if it offers an alternate ending.

Vixy :]
