Movie Review - No Country For Old Men / Hitman / The Mist

Three movies, one shared plot: Bad thing comes to town. Kills everything in sight. Shows no mercy. End credits roll. :]

Seriously, though.

No Country For Old Men was about a bad guy whose weapon of choice is quite different and original and the sound of it being used just sent chills thru me. Hell, just LOOKING at it will made you shudder once you know how it works. The same guy that plays the bad guy in this one played the good guy in Love In The Time Of Cholera but because of the weirdo hairdo he had going, I kept seeing Brad Garrett which obviously would be a strange role for him. But it made the movie that much more enjoyable for me. This movie got the majority of scares out of me from the lack of a musical score. No crescendoing parts when he would appear and quite a few shocking things were happening in the background while your focus is supposed to be on the foreground. Made for interesting viewing. All in all, excellent, although I hated the ending. I was left feeling very unsatisfied. If I said anything more than that, it would ruin the experience for you. The movie made me consider reading the book it was taken from.

Hitman was about a gun for hire whose latest assignment was to kill a government official. When he finds out that he "missed" and now there is a witness, he has to find and kill the witness, and then complete his assignment and kill the government guy. In the meantime, lots of other people are after him (some good, some bad) and he begins to question why he was hired to kill this one particular guy. Still...he's killing everyone in sight and some of the places where the fights break out are original, while some are corny. Lots of action scenes and a high body count will please, and this one is more of a typical film where you have the musical score to help you determine what's coming next. Pretty good movie. Very satisfying ending except you're still wondering if he was a good guy or a bad guy. Easy to believe it was based on a video game.

The Mist was about a strange mist that comes to town and traps folks in a local supermarket. Anyone daring to go outside into the mist is mysteriously attacked by huge bug-like creatures. Flying scorpion-like things make up the majority but there are also large bird-like things, and many large spider-like creatures as well. And the first one you see has tentacles with deadly spikes on it. Once everyone knows that this mist is bad news, and realize that there is simply glass between them and the creatures outside, they start piling up bags of dogfood against the windows but because of the flashlights they are using, this attracts the bug-like creatures and the windows are now completely covered with them. To make matters worse, one of the bird-like creatures swoops down to grab one of the bug-like creatures and now the window is starting to crack. Everyone is scurrying to turn off all the lights to make the bug-like creatures go away but it's too late and one more hit against the glass and there is now a hole in the glass and some of the creatures come in and start attacking. So now they're left wondering if it's safer inside or if they should take their chances outside because one of the vehicles is parked just a few yards away and it holds 8 people....it takes awhile to get going into the story as the character introduction is a bit boring but that's typical Stephen King as this movie is based on a short story by him. I remembered loving the story and thinking it would make a great movie, but honestly do not remember how it ended, so I don't know if the movie was true to the story's ending, but I can say that they did a great job with the special effects and unlike The Langoliers, you don't have to wait until Act 4 of the movie to see what it is you're dealing with. Very good movie. Hated the ending.

just saw no country for old men; it's unassumingly unconventional and yet (thankfully) never over the top. morally dumbfounding, but that can be a good thing... all in all the Coen brothers deserve their oscars, well done indeed.

Interesting viewpoint, Patrick. And, thank you for posting, by the way. Welcome!

I just checked out your blog and I really like your setup. I have added it to my favorites and will be checking into it later when I have more time. (Alas, that might be awhile.)
