Movie Review - Beowulf 3-D

It was 6:45pm. I was still at work and looking at my to-do list with still 15+ things on it, so I decided eff it and I left to go see the one movie I hadn't seen yet at my theater....Beouwulf.

I had no interest in seeing this movie, but they were showing it in 3-D and ANY 3-D movie was going to be cool.

So my opinion on it? Now THIS is what a 3-D movie should be! (Anyone else remember seeing Spy Kids 3-D and feeling gypped? I think they had maybe 2 scenes that were worthy of the 3-D description.)

Being a 3-D movie, my plan was to count how many near heart attacks I had with the stuff jumping off the screen at me. There were SEVEN TIMES when this happened. That's pretty WOW in MY book!

The story, itself, wasn't too terrible. I was actually surprised. And now I'm a bit curious to see what the "real" movie looks like because there were a few characters that appeared to be in the full computer animated version throughout the whole movie. (Maybe they were the actors that didn't feel like being in the 3-D version because they think they're too good for that?)

So the story: The mighty warrior, Beouwulf, is all about the tall tales. He conquers the monsters but then as he's bragging about his feat, each time he tells the story, he is more heroic with each kill. The latest monster, Grendal, walks into the "meat hole" and literally starts ripping people apart. Beouwulf has been promised this special gold horn trophy if he can defeat Grendal. Since Grendal doesn't have armor or weapons of any sort, he will fight the monster unarmed as well ... and in the nude. This was an interesting scene because he is obviously naked but the only thing they show you is his bare butt. And of course they do the strategically placed objects so that when he is standing nude facing you, you still can't see anything. :] It was funny because the Angelina Jolie character also was nude....sort of...having this see thru outfit on that was almost part of her skin (she was a monster, remember) so the guys in the audience were "looking for the nipples" and the girls in the audience were "looking for the penis". Heheheh.

Anyway, the very first huge scare scene is when Grendal walks into the meat hole. The camera shows the entrance where there is nothing there and you know that something is going to happen and you prepare yourself for a scare but good GOD the way that they did it, I swear to you my heart must have jumped out of my body! And the particular theater I was in (# 18) is the digital sound room and with every crash, boom, and explosion, I could actually feel the sound in my chest!

He then faces Grendal's mom (the character played the computer animated Angelina Jolie) where she seductively tells him that he owes her a son and if he gives her a son she will promise him he will be king forever. Greedy soul that he is, he beds her and next thing you know, he's king. (Saying how he became king would be a bit of a spoiler and that's actually the best part of the storyline.)

Not 100% sure I want to see the regular version of this movie because I would probably be disappointed, but the 3-D version is a MUST SEE! It was awesome, Awesome, AWESOME!!!! My favorite parts were the water bubbles and the sparks from the fires.

(In case you were curious, the characters that appeared to be computer animated the entire time besides the above mentioned are the Robin Wright character, the Anthony Hopkins character and the John Malkovich character.)

Might even have to go see this one again. Will be much better seeing in the theater, but as soon as it comes out on dvd (if it does) I'll be first in line to buy a copy.

Vixy :]
