Another older post - not sure if it's on dvd yet or not, but this is my review based on seeing it at the theater - opening night of course.
An adoption agency that matches foster kids with potential permanent parents has found the perfect match for a recently widowed science fiction writer. They are a perfect fit because he writes about aliens from Mars and the boy thinks he is from Mars. They form an instant bond and both learn from each other what it is truly like to be human.
I love John Cusack. He can do no wrong in my book, so I'm a bit biased when it comes to movies with him. Regardless, this movie had a good plot and good characters. Reminded me a bit of K-Pax with a kid instead of an adult where there are several scenes that make you start wondering if he really IS from another planet as he offers his "Martian wish" and can taste colors. This was a very good drama with bits of humor sprinkled throughout. The ending was a little anti-climactic but sap I am, it had me crying, anyway. The trailers show this as being a comedy. While there are lots of comedic scenes, if you go in thinking that it is a comedy, you will be disappointed. In other words, don't go see this if you're happily bouncing off the walls. If you're in the mood for a quieter drama with a great storyline, then go see this.
